Literacy at The Dearne High School

We believe that literacy is the key to all learning and as such every teacher at The Dearne High School is a teacher of literacy.

In addition to their English lessons our students are provided with a multitude of strategies and experiences to help them to develop strong literacy skills. This focus applies to all our students whether they struggle with literacy or are high fliers, everyone is pushed to improve.

Our strategies for improving literacy include:

Breakfast Booster: A chance for student who need to improve their reading skills to get the day off to a good start by reading with an adult.

Book Boxes: all form tutors have a box of books, magazines and newspapers, which students read during form period.

Book Club: a group of students meet regularly to review and discuss books that have been selected for prestigious national book awards.

Catch-up Literacy: we were a pilot school for this innovative one-to-one reading project that provides extra support for those student who are not reading at the level expected for their age.

Diagnostic Literacy: all students in KS3 are given a termly literacy target by their English teacher. All teachers are aware of this target and use it to help the student to focus on one aspect of their literacy that they really need to improve. In this way the student is getting the same message and same level of support in every subject, not just in English.

Literacy Fortnight: this is an annual event involving competitions, special workshops, readings, the publication of a poetry and story anthology and many more activities designed to raise the profile of reading and writing with our students.

The learning zone is the school’s centre for literacy. It is an area for teaching and learning, and independent study.
Library facilities, and the school Librarian are available to students from all year groups at designated times throughout the week. This facility is also available to students before and after school through part of the study support provision. Reading, and use of the library facilities are promoted by the support staff who work in the area.

Spellzone: a programme to improve spelling at all levels is available on line to all our students and their families. Follow the link to www.spellzone.com and put in the Username: dearne and Password: learn.
