MFL curriculum overview

KS3

Year 7

All students start French in Year 7 and have two lessons per week. The Métro course book is used and the following topics are normally covered:-

Personal information
School equipment
Alphabet
Colours
Family & Pets
Descriptions
School
Clothes
Sports
Weather


As well as learning the French language, you will learn about how people live in France and the many French speaking countries in the world.

All students are given a homework booklet each half term which contains six weeks’ worth of homework.
All Year 7 students are offered the opportunity to visit the Christmas market in Lille in December.

Year 8

In year 8 students have two French lessons per week. The Métro 2 vert and rouge course books are used and the following topics are normally covered:

House and home
Holidays
Town & directions
Souvenirs
Buying a snack
Personal Information
Past Tense
Daily Routine (Reflexive verbs)
Arranging to go out
Cinema + Films
Family and Friends
Illness



All students are given a homework booklet each half term which contains six weeks’ worth of homework.
All year 8 students are given the opportunity to go to France for a 5 day visit [including a day at Disneyland Paris] at Easter.

year 9

In year 9 students have two French lessons per week. The Métro 3 vert and rouge course books are used and the following topics are normally covered:

Food and Shopping

 Getting to know France

Arranging a Visit to Paris

Describing your town

Family/Jobs
The world of work
Keeping Fit/Healthy Eating + Giving Advice

Clothes + Shopping

All students are given a homework booklet each half term which contains six weeks’ worth of homework.

All Year 9 students are given the opportunity to go to Normandy in France on a 5 day “Language detective” visit in October.

KS4

In Key Stage 4 students follow the WJEC syllabus for GCSE French.  This is a Level 1 and 2 qualification.  The four skills are equally weighted being worth 25% each and cover five contexts:

  • Education
  • Leisure
  • Home life
  • Holidays and tourism
  • Environment

 

Listening and reading skills are assessed in a final examinations in June of Y11 - each exam lasts a maximum of 45 minutes.
Speaking is assessed in May of Y11 in the form of a 12 minute examination conducted by the teacher
[ 2 role plays and then a short conversation in French]. 
Writing is assessed through coursework. The student completes five pieces of coursework over the two year period.  Each piece of coursework is a maximum of 150 words.
