Religious Studies curriculum overview
At Key Sage 3, Students study various aspects of the three Abrahamic faiths (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), looking at important festivals, life stages and beliefs – stressing similarities as well as differences.
At Key Stage 4, Students currently study only Christianity for a’ short course’ GCSE, being taught in only one period a week. We are currently looking at introducing a full-course option group, which would take into account some other religions’ views on the issues studied (Life and Death, Social Harmony, Marriage and the Family, Wealth and Poverty and Belief in God).
KS3
Year 7
Three modules, studied one per term: Signs and Symbols, Festivals and Feasts, Special Places . With each of the three faiths being studied within the three modules, in turn. Students are assessed with an in-class assignment at the end of each module. Homework books are issued every term, with a homework task due roughly every two weeks.
Year 8
Each of the three faiths is covered, one per term, with the title ‘Groups and Rules for Living’. As in year 7, homework books are used throughout the year.
year 9
In year 9, students study two mixed-faith modules ‘Rites of Passage and ‘The Moral Maze’, before making an early start on their short-course GCSE (this enables us to spend more time coaching and revising in Year 11, before the GCSE exam).
KS4
Year 10
In Year 10, Students continue studying their GCSE Short course, with each module fitting a term – ‘Issues of Life and Death’, ‘Marriage and the Family’ and ‘Social Harmony’. There is a GCSE – style exam given in March as preparation for the real thing in Year 11.
