Attendance Guide

We have a great deal to offer Students at The Dearne High School. We want all Students to make the most of what is on offer, if a Student is not present, then he or she is undoubtedly missing valuable learning time.

Parents are legally responsible for ensuring their children attend school. Although some absences are unavoidable, especially in the case of illness, we wish to work with parents in ensuring attendance is as high as possible.

How Parents Can Help

  • Please ensure you child is punctual to school
  • Keep us informed!
  • If you know in advance that your child will be absent, send a note to a form tutor or ring and leave a message saying what is wrong and when you expect them to be back. If anything changes, let us know
  • Upon return please send a note with dates and reasons for absences, to the form tutor
  • Avoid family holidays during term time

Authorised and Unauthorised Absence

Authorised absence can only be granted for the following reasons:
  • Illness or any unavoidable cause (e.g. medical or dental treatment, family bereavement)
  • Work Experience
  • Study Leave
  • Interview
  • Religious Observance
Occasions outside of those listed above are considered to be unauthorised, even if parents send a note.

The Anti-Social behaviour Act 2003 now gives schools an additional sanction of fixed penalty fines for parents of students with poor attendance or unauthorised holidays in term time.

By law, a school has to keep records, which are published each year on unauthorised absence.

Leaving School Early

Where possible, we hope parents will support us in ensuring that students are in school whenever lessons are taking place.

However, on the odd occasion such as a medical appointment that could not be made outside of the school day, students can be allowed to leave the school site if they have a valid appointment card, or have a note from parents.

Students need to:
  • Show their form teacher the note/card during registration
  • Show the note to the teacher of the lesson they will be leaving
  • Swipe out at the student services office
  • Swipe back in upon return to school
Please ensure you child returns to school whenever possible, a ten-minute dental check rarely needs a half-day absence from school.

Students should not leave school during the school day without permission and without swiping out. Under these circumstances school is unable to fulfil its duty-of-care to students.

Family Holidays

A student who misses large portions of school time is obviously likely to be disadvantaged, so we request that whenever possible, holidays are taken outside of the school terms.

Leave of Absence forms for holidays in term time can be obtained from the school office and must be completed and returned to school at least one week before the event. If leave of absence if not granted parents may be liable to a fixed penalty fine.

Education Welfare Officers (EWOs)

Education Welfare Officers work with parents, students and school to ensure students are getting the best out of their education. Much of their time is taken up with matters regarding attendance; they form a vital additional link between school and home.
