Caring for Pupils
The Dearne High School has a strong tradition of providing a high standard of care for its students. If at any time you or your child have any worries that are likely to affect their performance, please contact the school.
Pastoral care is the responsibility of all staff, however, there is a team of individuals which have specific responsibilities.
The OASIS team
The team works within school to provide students with a warm, caring environment where everyone feels wanted and secure.
The Oasis team work with students and families to ensure that all pupils maintain full time education to enable them to maximise opportunities and to realise their potential.
Support includes 1-1 work, group work, strengthening families and partnerships with other support agencies.
Telephone 01709 892211 or 892565 ext:220 to contact the Oasis team.
Form Tutors
A form tutor is, in many ways, the key person in a students' life, someone who sees a student on a daily basis, and is often the link to home.
Routine letters should be addressed to form tutors who will pass on relevant information as appropriate. The tutor group will be registered together and these groups form the basis of teaching groups in the first three years for some subjects.
Impact team
The Impact team have overall responsibility for students in their year group and working in close liaison with the Oasis team and form tutors. They also focus on progress made by students across faculty areas, learning attitudes and learning progress.
They will get to know your child very well, and will often be the person who you speak to if you need to contact school.
Additional Information
Telephone 01709 892565 to contact the pastoral team.
Child Protection
The Dearne High School has a clear policy on Child Protection. We work closely with the Education Authority and follow the Child Protection Procedures in accordance with the Secretary of State’s guidance set out in ‘Working Together’
The school has a designated Child Protection Co-ordinator, who has responsibility for training and support of staff in school with respect to child abuse and protection.
The Child Protection Co-ordinator is also responsible for liasing with agencies such as Social Services where this is deemed necessary.
All members of staff at The Dearne High School are made aware of the Child Protection Policy and Procedures.
Illness at School
Trained staff and rest rooms are available in the event of illness or accidents at school. However, if such a situation arises, staff will make every effort to contact parents. It is therefore essential that a current contact telephone number is kept on record at school at all times.
Medical Problems
Information regarding recurring or on going medical problems needs to be made available to the school and will be treated in confidence.
Medication
If possible medicines and tablets should be taken before and after school.
In exceptional circumstances, where medication is prescribed by a doctor, arrangements can be made so the medication can be administered in school.
This involves the medication being brought in on a daily basis to a designated member of staff, who will make the medication available. For this procedure to be possible, parents must complete the form APM 1 (S), available from the school offices.
Disabled Students
The Dearne High School is proud of its ability to welcome into the school students with physical disabilities.
The school welcomes all students as part of its equal opportunities policy. The School wishes to aid student success and so it carefully evaluates it ability to meet the particular needs of specific students.
Routine Checks
Medical, sight and dental checks are organised as a matter of routine by the school. Letters will be sent home via pupils where consent is required.
Duty-of-Care For Pupils
Parents should note that whilst duty-of-care to students during the school days lies within the school, supervisory responsibility for a child lies with the parents prior to the start of the school day as well as after the scheduled finish time. Where children are engaged in extra-curricular activities sanctioned by the school, responsibility lies with the school. Supervision by school staff commences in a morning at 8.25 am, 5 minutes before the 8.30 am entry bell and ends at 3.05 pm, 5 minutes after school finishes.
Personal Property
Parents are asked to ensure that students' personal property is clearly and permanently marked with their name. We strongly recommend that large amounts of money and valuables e.g. gold jewellery, mobile phones, iPods be left at home. If is necessary to bring such items into school they should be handed to a member of staff for safe keeping.
We cannot accept responsibility for valuables brought into school that are not handed in. We ask for parents’ cooperation in ensuring that their children take proper care of school property, books, musical instruments, etc on loan.
