Parents as Partners

In school we do all we can to offer students opportunities and to help them to operate effectively. If you are concerned about your child's academic progress, please contact the relevant Impact Tutor. If you are concerned about your child's behaviour affecting learning, please contact the Oasis team.

Getting Organised

The school provides a student planner for all pupils.

We look forward to working with parents, and suggest some ways in which you could help:
  • Chat with your child about what he/she is doing
  • Ask to see the planner, discuss the contents and add comments and sign it on a weekly basis
  • Help your child get organised for each day’s work, refer to the planner!

Homework

Homework is an important element in the partnership between school, parents and students. Most students and all staff recognise the need for and the value of homework. Students need support from school and home to ensure homework is done properly. An appropriate area to study quietly at home is very important. Homework is set in each subject and students will receive a homework timetable each year. The student planner is used by students to record all homework and parents should check that homework has been completed. If there are any difficulties with completing homework parents should contact the appropriate year tutor.

Everyday necessities include:
  • Bag
  • Student Planner
  • Pens
  • Pencils
  • Ruler
  • Eraser
  • Coloured pencils
Different days will need different items, e.g. History books, French books, PE clothing, Technology folder.

Parents' Evenings

The School places great emphasis on the importance of parent-school relationships. Parents are key partners in the education of their children. Consultations therefore are an important opportunity for parents to discuss the progress of their child. Form teachers and subject teachers are available to share information and give an insight into your child’s progress.

These evenings usually run from 4.00pm until 7.00 pm. In order to cut down the amount of waiting time, and therefore operate as efficiently as possible, we operate the following system.

A letter will be sent home, inviting parents. Please complete and return this.

Students make appointments of approximately five minutes each with their teachers.

Parents bring this appointment sheet along to the evening. Plans of where teachers are situated will be available.

We very much encourage you to attend, as the evenings are of great benefit to all concerned.

The school also offers two full days of Target Setting (Autumn Term) and Target Review (Summer Term) where parents and students can discuss academic and pastoral progress with staff.

If you cannot attend, please contact the school and a mutually convenient time can be arranged.

Reporting to Parents

Parents are given a written report about their child’s progress. This will be in the form of students Progress File.

This system allows for comments from subject teachers, form teachers, students and parents.

This often forms the starting point of conversations which take place at parents’ evenings, but this obviously broadens out. The conversations are a two way process, which allow staff to learn more about students, as well as parents to find out about their child’s progress.

The school also organises curriculum evenings which help parents to further understand their child's progress.
